Plant some seeds and glowing flowers grow, illuminating everything around them. (Munch on a glowing flower and your character will glow for a few minutes, too.) Even in the darkest places, lightning bugs circle in packs, hidden ore deposits glitter in the gloom, even the slime trails of disgusting monsters give off a welcome bit of illumination.

Yes, you're trapped underground in the dark surrounded by horrors. But it's still perfectly lovely and chill.

The Basic Workbench gives you access to a bunch of important items for setting up your base. Here are the key items you'll need in your first couple of hours:

Chest is the only paintable item storage, as space efficiently as any later on. Adjacent workbenches pull directly from them.

Smithing Skill Issue: The Blacksmith skill is currently not working properly. The skill is supposed to decrease the amount of ingredients required to repair items and craft items in the anvil, but it currently only decreases the amount that's visible in the crafting recipe, while still using the original (non-discounted) amount of said recipe.

It’s a great value at $13, but don’t let it overstay, either. Just because you can automate rare scarlet ore mining with a drill, conveyor belt, and a robot arm, that doesn’t mean you strictly “need to.” It can feel like progress for progress’ sake.

While the likes of Terraria and Valheim continue to hog headlines, Core Keeper offers strong competition. Its compelling gameplay, excellent art style, and extensive range of content make it worth diving in.

My main issue with core keeper is that the progression of combat and the player character feels so incredibly shallow that I felt like I had played with the same simplistic combat since the very first minute of the game. There are "skill trees" but they level up very passively, and offer dull upgrades that don't affect how the game is played, but rather serve as slow boosts that reward you for doing the same thing over and over again. A milestone-based progression system in which you perhaps achieve certain feats to unlock these points could've made Core Keeper Gameplay for a more engaging system, but even that would fall short due to the simplicity of the upgrades being offered.
